“Maybe growing up doesn’t always mean carving out the magic from your soul. I give this book 5/5 stars, and I can’t wait for book 2, Shadow, coming out July 13, 2021! I loved that there were plot twists I didn’t see coming. Her characters are tangible and flawed she weaves a tale of what it means to face growing up, fear and anxiety, and light and shadow because “the stars shine brightest in the darkness.” What happens when Peter is faced with aging? What happens when Claire meets him? The story has sparks of action, adventure, and romance. Kara Swanson’s Dust is filled with magic and emotion. She doesn’t believe in fairy tales, she is riddled with anxiety, and a strange dust flakes off her skin, but she will do whatever it takes to find Connor. He went missing six years ago, after telling her he was going to Peter Pan. Meanwhile, all Claire wants is her brother. We don’t know what we only get fractured, brief, memories from Peter, who is wrestling with growing up and the mysterious thing that tore Neverland apart. He’s being hunted by the Lost Boys and Hook, and something terrible has happened to Neverland. This Neverland is broken, and Peter is stuck in London, unable to fly, and desperately searching for the girl who can fix it: Claire. Kara Swanson’s Dust is a retelling of the story of Peter Pan, but this is not the Neverland we know. “‘That man took Connor to London, Claire.’ And with one sentence, my nightmare becomes a reality.”
